Challenge 5. Implementation and management of variable horizontal signage to optimize road capacity

Goal of the challenge

The aim of the fifth challenge is to explore new technologies and methodologies to be able to signal and mark roads in a variable way with new lanes without the need to physically place cones. The solution must be able to be implemented easily and ensuring road safety conditions, avoiding as much as possible the physical work of conservation operators.

Challenge's description

Currently, operations such as optimizing the capacity of roads with more than two lanes in peak hours and lack of capacity in one direction, or lane closures for conservation work, are carried out by the mechanical operation of the operators road maintenance and operation that must place and remove cones in order to separate and indicate traffic directions.

In order to optimize road capacity and minimize traffic impacts of this type of operation, and to be more flexible in managing these changes in the direction of traffic, as well as minimize the risk of suffering an occupational accident on the part of the operators, the DGIM wants to explore solutions for the implementation and management of variable horizontal signage, which allows to improve the current situation which is very inflexible, expensive and with maintenance problems such as the combination of light beacons on the pavement with signaling portals variable
